How to furnish a black room

So this is how our livingroom lookes like after the Halloween craze. The black paperboards are removed from ceiling and floor and thousands of staples are pulled out, after that, I refurnished the room.
Our living room is very small (because we turned the real one to our bedroom) and contains the fire place, a tv and the sofa, thats all.
If you want to paint a room black, I think you should chose a small room, because black is a colour that creeps close to you. A large room would look quite small, while a small room feels a little more cosier, like a hideout.
If you want to have lots of black details and decorations, you might consider not to paint the walls black, because black decorations will not be visible as you can se on the photo below.
My lovely black, victorian piedestal were changed to a white more modern dito. When I put the jar with the mossy twigs and black decorations, I noticed that the decorations disappeared in the wall.
The same thing is with black picture frames, they will disappear. I moved pictures with golden frames to this room and it looked great. To balance the golden frames, I changed the chandeliers in the room from mercury glass to brass. I only had three though so I need to buy more of them.

The white cover on the sofa, the white table and the white ceiling, makes the room a bit brighter and it is easier to orientate in.
I can assure you that a completely black room is difficult to walk in, you will feel disoriented and the determination of distance is disturbed.
When I had painted the room and then started to cover the walls with black paperboard, I got more and more disoriented. When I had covered the fireplace in paper, I had to look for my stapelgun all the time, it kind of disappeared.
A profit with the black walls is that my grandfathers Art deco lamp suddenly got visible. The lamp with the soft yellow glass plates disappeared in the light yellow room.
This is the short wall between the doors were the tv stands. I use an antique washing bench with marble top as a table and bench for the tv. The black speakers looks a little more discrete with the black walls as well.
I have chosen to use glow lites above the tv, because it felt risky everytime i was going to blow out the candles.
What I have to do next with this room, is a new sofa in old style or an antique sofa that is comfortable to sit/lay in and remove the carpet and hopefully find a wood floor underneath to paint grey.
I was very sceptic about painting the room black. But as paint is cheap and easy, I gave it a try. It went better than I thought, even my mother likes it.

  1. I want a black ceiling. It works on rides at Disneyland to make the room seem cavernous.......

    1. That's an interesting point. I our ceiling were a bit higher that would definitely have been an option in one of the rooms.

  2. It looks great! I had a flatmate who also painted his whole room black (including the ceiling) which made a nice man cave. But as he only had black furniture as well, everyone bumped into all kinds of things there!

Your living room looks much more mature and stylish, I'd move in in a second!

  3. What a lovely room <3 I love the way you made black walls work with a white ceiling, it looks so decadently beautiful <3

  7. There's something extremely sophisticated and comfortable about a dark room. I'm finding that my red bedroom has some of the same qualities you are describing. It's like a little hideout, but a comfortable one.

    Beautiful! Simply stunning.

  8. I love your living room! Very much my kind of room, except you have been restrained with the accessorizing and so achieve a sophisticated look I would have never managed!

    1. I think restraining accessories can come with age. I don't like clutter but I don't like extremely clean spaces either.

  9. Fabuslous! I guess, all the darker or vivid colors have the same, diminutive effect on a room, I used to have orange walls, which also made my room a lot smaller, than it actually was. Apprantly, I didn't mind it because I liked how cozy it was with all the warmth of the color, but indeed, bright furniture can poise it a bit. A friend of mine painted her walls black and her furniture red with black details like handles and knobs; I believe it would have looked a lot better the other way, but anyway...she also bumps into something with every step. :)

  11. It looks fantastic, I love a combination of black and white, I have been thinking a lot about my future home decor recently, I can't wait to start decorating, there will definitely be a lot of black and white accents!

  12. WOW!!! What a beautiful living room. Very bold to paint the walls black but they came out pretty great! And those old frames give a wonderful vintage touch in the theme!! <3 Beautiful!

  13. I love it, and you did a beautiful job!! I wish I could do that with my private room, but we rent an apartment with off-white walls, and I don't think they would like me to paint a room black!!

  15. I love it! I especially like the texture of the paper. And that little shelf with the flowers above the TV - so pretty! :o)

That's the trouble with antique sofas - they're usually very pretty to look at, but not all that comfortable to lay on. I guess people never flopped down on their couches to watch TV back in the day! :P

  18. I like! :) Jättemysigt rum! Jag har börjat samla på mig ramar och tavlor i guld och silver, det passar så bra till mörka väggar.

  19. Gorgeous decorating! You make a very good point about black accessories disappearing against a black wall. All the white looks lovely against a dark background.
