Book piles

So many books, but so little time. Lots of books has been bought this summer both for studies and for recreation. The recreational books will have to wait for a while now because the semester has began and there is lots of reading and writing ahead. This is a pile of books that has to wait it is; The whole Harry Potter series, I will read them for Alfons at bedtime (it's great that he says the books are better than the movies), The Steampunk bible (couldn't resist), Flood of fire (bought at the Steamcon), The diary of Årstafrun (a diary from 16th century), American Gods, and Sustainable living by John Seymore. The pile actually tells a lot about my interests.
Here's a few books read this summer that I wanted to review. Hollow city was bought earlier this year in English because I didn't want to wait for the Swedish translation, but didn't have time to read it until the summer vacation came. I actually prefer it in the original language. Hollow City is the following book after Miss Peregrine's school for peculiar children. It is full of adventure and dangerous enemies. The book is actually a long escape that starts in the first book and I do think that this particular event could have been cut down a bit. Maybe the writer wanted to include all the photos and weave the story around them.
I can tell you that this is not the end of the story, it continues in a third book not ready to be sold yet.
My heart beats for chemistry and this book is amazing. I haven't found it translated wich is a darn pity. It tells about poisons and the darker aspects of chemistry. Like, what happens when a corpse is decomposing, how long does it takes ( wich is cruical for the forensics), how to preserve a mummy, odors of hell, drugs and poisons. All the substances are scientifically described and their consequenses along with real and fictional stories. So if you can read in Swedish or maybe find an English version, I higly recommend "Ond Kemi" by Ulf Ellervik. He has also written a similar book about the chemistry around joyments (sex, food and feelings).
This is my non-feng shui-view while reading books in the bed. Piles of clothes, unmatching curtains and a skeleton. My book shelves are brim ful and today I will go to Ikea to buy another book shelf for my student books.
Me and the boys went to a town an hours drive from home last friday, because the youngest would start the bandy season. It was a warm evening outdoors and very cold in the arena. When you have kids training sports it's necessary to be an attending parent, it is also necessary to get along with the other parents to make everything go smooth. I really tried to talk to the others, but was completely ignored, it's not the first time this happens. I must have looked like a fool not worthy to talk to or something, maybe it was that I didn't wear any sporty leisure clothes. While the others sat on the rood loft I was by the ice, fetching balls (bandy = balls, no pucks) and lacing skates, who was the sporty parent now?
Oh, before I stop my babble I will recommend you to read my other blog Along the green road where I write about healthy food, vegetables and a bit of gardening. If you have a citrus tree I give you a tip what you can do with the leaves.
Look the firework has started! I love my African lily, Agaphantus.

  1. That chemistry book sounds very useful. Cough cough. Maybe they know all us English speakers are too villainous to be allowed access to facts on decomposition and poison! :P

I read The Hollow City earlier this year too, I think. It was so much darker than the first though, maybe a little dark. I think what bothered me about it was that all the photos were real, so there were actual dead people and animals in the photos. I hope the last one is thrilling but less dark. More adventure less death.

    1. Good that you mentioned the photos. I also got struck by those photos of dead people. I also hope for a more well written ending of this story.

Tehe, you got Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes, who also are mentioned in this book.

  4. I love reading - as you might have noticed ^^- but I have never heard about "Miss Peregrine's school for peculiar children". I should add that and the second novel to the never ending "to read" list...

  5. I read Miss Peregrine's last year and am looking forward to reading Hollow City! I agree my personal reading list gets so pushed back because of readings for uni! I am lucky to have some very interesting courses this semester though, I get to read books about the witch craze in Western Europe and all about the occult!

    1. That is so interesting!! Yes we also had our share of witch hunting here in Sweden. In the later part of 15th century there was a witch hunting in my part of Sweden called "The big noise", a total of 300 women were killed during those years before death punishment were forbidden.

    1. I loved chemistry eventhough I found it a difficult subject. I loved to study chemistry at the university, some of my best years in my life :)

  9. Jag har precis påbörjat min läsperiod, och den där Ond Kemi hade jag gärna också tittat i :)

    Så vackra liljor!

  10. 'American Gods' is an excellent book! I had a copy, then loaned it to my son, and it has disappeared. I don't remember if he never gave it back, or if I stupidly got rid of it. :-(

  11. Oh my! That's a lot of books. Hollow City sounds interesting. I'm reading an anthology of vampire stories right now, it's great fun. :)

  12. Ond Kemi sounds fascinating! I love books like that...
I once had a book on the odd ways things have been invented, but I lost it a long time ago and have since forgotten the title =(
I just remember it being one of my most cherished books as a child.

  13. I love piles of books, and have a couple in each room. I keep telling myself I need to have a clear out, but when I start, I come across a long-forgotten book and sit there reading instead!

I adored Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and am eager to read more x

  15. My book pile is almost as big as yours except I've been restraining myself somewhat because there's not much room in the hotel. Haha.

I always felt uncomfortable at the kids' sporting events for the exact same reason as you. It was a great relief when they were old enough that I didn't have to go anymore.

    1. Some say that our large house will be very empty when the kids move out. We say that we will fill them with our hobbies ;).

It's completely different in Oskars team. There are even a couple of elderpunks :D, pleasant people. The atmosphere around the boys is also much better.

  16. Exactly, time is not our friend. And especially when it comes to books!! I have so many to read.. Wish you to have some time free to read them. Reading for uni is not that funny as reading for pleasure but both are great ways to open our minds ^-^ Good luck with this semesters work! That skeleton surely keeps you great company (haha i loooove it!!!).

  17. I love your taste in books! I was curious if the Miss Pereguin series was any good. It's on my list of books to read in the future.

  18. I liked the two Miss Peregrine books - though I prefered reading the first one. I found some of the photos in the second book very disturbing, too.

    Hugs, Sal
